Why Live in Garden City, ID?

Garden City started its history from its very own location - on the Boise River floodplain. Chinese immigrants leased some of Thomas J. Davis 600-acre bought Government Island land which he called GI Ranch. These immigrants came over to mine for gold but preferred gardening, growing produce and selling it to the people. They did the same with the land they leased from the GI Ranch. The farms were located just upstream closer to Boise. These Chinese immigrants continued to grow produce and eventually raised hogs and started garbage collection service in the area. They were able to sort the product and feed it to their hogs. Currently, the Chinese community who once lived in the area, left the most important treasure - the Garden City name and the Chinden Boulevard name which is a coined term of “China garden.” On May 22, 1949, Ada County commissioners gave the approval of the Garden City name.
